Random Quote

"I think I want to quit acting after every movie. Each time I have to decide whether or not I want to go back to the struggle of seducing people into believing that I am an entirely different individual. It's especially challenging when Hollywood would like me to be the same bland character over and over again."

Synopsis
Years ago, a powerful Irish mafia figure placed a small selection of his youngest, brightest men into the Massachusetts Police Academy as cadets. Their purpose is to eventually rise within the prestigious ranks of the city's police department, to serve as the eyes and ears of their boss.

While somewhere else, a young cadet was assigned with an equally dangerous task: infiltrate the Irish syndicate headed by the man sending in his own to the Boston Police. Now, one cadet is an up and coming police official with a torn allegiance to his job and to the criminal mastermind that put him there. While the other cadet is the trusted number two of that man, only finding his professional duties are becoming blurred with his current state.

But new clues have lead to unfortunate discoveries, when both sides realize they're being watched by the enemy. It's now all just a matter of time before the men assigned to find out whose the infiltrator, could come to a bloody end when someone's identity may be revealed.

Trivia & Facts
° Filming Locations:
• Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA
Charlestown, Boston, Massachusetts, USA (view)

• As of 2007, this film had the highest grossing box-office opening and the highest total box-office gross in Martin Scorsese's career.

• The film is an American adaptation of the Hong Kong film, Mou gaan dou.

Leonardo DiCaprio was cast in the title role in The Good Shepherd, but he dropped out to play Billy Costigan in this movie. Matt Damon then took the role.

Mark Wahlberg based his performance on the police officers who'd arrested him about two dozen times in his youth, and the reactions of his parents who had to come bail him out with their grocery money.

Robert De Niro was asked to participate, but ultimately did not because of his work on The Good Shepherd.

• Body count: 22

• This is the movie with the most uses of the word "fuck" and its derivatives (237) to win the Best Picture Oscar.

• Warner Brothers bought the remake rights to the film for US$1.75 million in 2003.

• Many scenes with Jack Nicholson were improvised. Jack Nicholson was given the opportunity to do whatever he wanted to add to the character's unpredictability. The scene where Billy and Frank are talking was loosely scripted, and many surprises happened in it, including Frank pulling out the gun.

Martin Scorsese sent the script to Mel Gibson, offering him an unspecified role. Mel Gibson thought the script was fantastic, but was unable to accept the part because he was starting production on Apocalypto at the time.

• Originally, Jack Nicholson turned down his role in the movie, but after a meeting with Martin Scorsese, William Monahan and Leonardo DiCaprio, he was finally convinced to play the role of Frank Costello. The main reason he joined the production was because he had previously done a few comedies, and wanted to play a villain again, and he considered the character of Costello to be the ultimate incarnation of evil.

Martin Scorsese had originally wanted to cast a known actress, either Kate Winslet or Hilary Swank, for the part of Madolyn. But he later decided to go with someone new instead which was Vera.

• Originally Brad Pitt was cast as Colin Sullivan, but later dropped out. He gave it up to work with Alejandro González Iñárritu in Babel.

• When Billy is talking with Madolyn for the first time in her office, the position of the tissue sticking out of the top of the tissue box on Madolyn's desk changes a few times.

• The taped recording of Costello and Sullivan that Madolyn listens to is from their conversation in the porn theater. However Costello's lines are different on the tape than they were in the theater. One example: While in the theater he says "It won't be me who suffers for it". Whereas on the tape you hear him say "It won't be me who pays for it".

° Awards: Won 4 Oscars. Another 47 wins & 50 nominations. (view)
