Vera Farmiga on Bates Motel and Deciding to Do Television

Norman Bates and his mom were just really, really close, okay? That’s the jumping-off point for A&E’s Bates Motel (premiering March 18 at ten), a sort of prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic Psycho in which mother and son have set up shop in Northern California following the mysterious — and bloody — death of Norman’s dad. But rather than going back to the fifties, Norman’s coming-of-age story is set in the modern day, by way of Twin Peaks with an Oedipal twist. As played by Vera Farmiga, Norma Bates is haunted, protective, sexy, and her relationship with Norman is at once innocent, intimate, and smothering. Following the Bates Motel press tour panel, Vulture caught up with Farmiga, who talked about playing mothers and becoming best friends with co-star Freddie Highmore.

Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore get close in ‘Bates Motel’ teaser and poster

We’ve seen quite a few dark glimpses into the world of “Bates Motel,” the upcoming A&E prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” but a new teaser at last gives us a good look at the show’s main cast members.

“Bates” is from the minds of “Lost” exec Carlton Cuse and “Friday Night Lights” writer Kerry Ehrin and explores the early days of everyone’s favorite mama’s boy, Norman Bates, after the duo open a motel in a rural area.

Unlike the previous teasers, which emphasized creepy, David Lynch-lite surrealism and outright horror, this new one finally centers on the show’s hero, Norman Bates (“Finding Neverland’s” Freddie Highmore) and his dear old mum, played by “Up in the Air” star Vera Farmiga. They sit on the bed together (perhaps a bit too close together), as the camera slowly tracks in on Norman’s smirking visage. The only dialogue: “I love you, Norman.”

I have added some pictures among posters, stills, on sets and promos of the movie.

Casting for ‘Admissions’

Three new actors joined Admissions and one of them are Vera’s lovely younger sister Taissa. I can’t wait to see them on screen together!

Taissa Farmiga, Spencer Lofranco, and Nicholas Braun signed on to the indie dramedy Admissions. Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga star as “a man and woman who fall in love while taking their children on a college admissions tour.” According to THR, Lofranco will play Garcia’s son and Taissa Farmiga will play Vera Farmiga’s daughter. The common last name and 21-year age gap between them sounds perfect for an on-screen mother-daughter duo. But in fact, the Farmigas are actually sisters. Braun will play an upperclassmen who is leading the tour.

Lofranco is new to the business, but I like what I saw of Braun and especially Farmiga on their respective basic cable shows, 10 Things I Hate About You and American Horror Story. Writer/directors Glenn German and Adam Rodgers secured a nice cast for their feature directorial debut. Shooting begins next month in Spokane, Washington.
